We Are the World - San Ramon, Costa Rica

We are the world, we are the children,

We are the ones who make a brighter day

So let’s start giving

There’s a choice we’re making

We’re saving our own lives

It’s true we’ll make a better day

Just you and me

The lyrics to Michael Jackson’s “We Are the World” might seem cliche, but WorldTeach volunteer Kiana Curry brings new life and power to the song with every day she spends teaching English in San Ramon, Costa Rica. Kiana has been working on a project with her students called “We are the World: Nations United” - a virtual trip around the world. Each grade is assigned a country - Australia for kindergarten, Italy for the first grade, Ghana for the second grade, Canada for the third grade, Brazil for the fourth and fifth grade, and Japan for the sixth grade. Each class will study the country’s culture and prepare a presentation in English.

On November 29, parents and community members are invited to the Escuela San Ramon to watch as the students make their presentations. The classroom will become a kind of international bazaar with food, dance, and art from all over the world. Even more, the classroom will be filled with music including “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”, “Imagine”, and of course, “We Are the World.”

These young Costa Rican tour guides need your help though! Things like costumes, DVDs, craft supplies, and ingredients are difficult to obtain with the limited financial resources available. As such, Kiana has set a fundraising goal of $500 by November 9th to make her students’ magic carpet ride a reality.

If you choose to donate, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure to select “Contribution to Volunteer Fee/In-Country Project" in the “Donation specified for" dropdown box.
  2. Fill out the “Name of WorldTeach Volunteer” as Kiana Curry, Costa Rica 2012.
  3. Select “Costa Rica” as the “Country of Service

Even if you are unable to contribute financially, please keep Kiana and her students in your thoughts. Check back soon to learn more about the Kiana's project and her amazing students!
